An excerpt from the article/review:
"Monica Yudovich's 'Hermanas' offers a colorful glimpse of a community seldom represented onstage. The members of the Herman family are Mexican American Jews living in Texas, where young Lisette (Yudovich) is attempting to establish her independence. It's no easy task when her adventurous big sister, Claudia (Adriana Gaviria), returns from New York and rekindles old sibling rivalries. To make matters worse, matriarch Telma (Kathryn Kates) has a habit of popping by Lisette's place unannounced, and usually at the worst possible time. Speaking a lively amalgam of English, Yiddish and Spanish, Telma has something to say about everything from Lisette's laundry to her taste in men. The three core players are entirely believable as a family and extremely deft at producing laughs without sacrificing authenticity. They are abetted by director Claudia Zelevansky and by a top-notch comic ensemble that includes Bridget Moloney as Lisette's twangy Anglo best friend, Paolo Andino as her brainless but mother-approved boyfriend, Denise Quinones (a former Miss Universe) as a maddeningly pretty neighbor and Ryan Duncan as an overachieving doctor who may not be as Jewish (or as straight) as the girls assume. Yudovich's script is as full of twists and achingly funny one-liners as it is packed with ethnic flavor, and it also delivers a poignant message about turning toward, rather than away from, family in the search for self-definition."

"With this disparate group of characters in place, Yudovich sets in motion some expected (and some pleasantly unexpected) romantic and comedic plot lines."
"Yudovich populates the play with terrific comic foils, none of whom behave completely as their backgrounds might indicate. Most delightful is the girls' mom, Telma, who, as played by Kathryn Kates, brings to mind Rita Moreno crossed with Renee Taylor." (Andy Propst,

"'Hermanas' is a new theatrical sitcom about Jewish Mexican-American sisters and all the Latin lovers and latkes that come with them. The dialogue certainly speaks to being a twenty-something in America ("He was friendly and I was drunk.") What keeps us in the simple story are the wonderful performances by actors like Paolo Andino, the hilarious Kathryn Kates and Bridget Moloney (making her New York stage debut...a delightful discovery)... the laughs are in good supply, and I walked out with a smirk thinking: Wow, I needed that." (J.P. Sarni,

"Hermanas has a soul to it, and it is a fully developed family comedy (not frequently spotted at Fringe). (It) lets one leave the theatre with a warm and fuzzy feeling, much like a member of
la familia itself." (Josh Sherman,
nytheatre.com)
"This delirious array of outsized personalities is so well realized by these amazing performers in Monica Yudovich's play...Claudia Zelevansky's lemonade-crisp direction, equal parts raucous farce and considerate drawing-room comedy, gives the production the verve and fluidity it requires to sail effortlessly from one amusement to another. And when Yudovich slips in just the right joke for one of those subsidiary personages, expect a seven-car pile-up of laughs." (Matthew Murray,
Talkinbroadway.com)
"Pleasurably silly." (Patrick,
justgoestoshowyou.blogspot.com)
"The script itself falls between a...Neil Simon play, an episode of
Everybody Loves Raymond, and the collected works of Joe DiPietro; which means that there are plenty of zingers and one-liners." (Josh Sherman,
nytheatre.com)
"...a special nod to Kathryn Kates, who is lively and flavorful in an overbearing mother role; thankfully, it is written with enough spice to keep it from being too cliched. The guys are terrific- Ryan Duncan has fun with his role as a too-perfect guy next door - nearly everything out of his mouth adds ridiculously to how perfect he is and cracks the audience up. And, bringing endearing warmth and disarming goofiness to his hammy role as a machismo self-absorbed Latin lover, Paolo Andino is a gleefully tasty pleasure. The audience ate him up with a spoon." (Patrick,
justgoestoshowyou.blogspot.com)
"Crisp pacing by director Claudia Zelevansky, combined with terrific performances by Kates, Moloney, and Duncan..." (Dan Bacalzo,

"(Adriana) Gaviria is excellent in the tricky role of the older sister Claudia." (Josh Sherman,

"(Paolo) Andino's delivery is pitch perfect." (Josh Sherman,

"We get to meet Mrs. Telma Herman in the hysterical personage of Kathryn Kates who pulls off an impressive trifecta of being Jewish, Latina, and completely endearing." (Josh Sherman,
nytheatre.com)
"The attractive set, designed by Robin Vest, is worthy of an Off-Broadway production." (Dan Bacalzo,
theatermania.com)
"...many male hearts former Miss Universe (Denise) Quinones brings to a life-threatening stand-still..." (Matthew Murray,

"...Yudovich's graceful portrayal of the younger sister unable to escape her elder's shadow." (Matthew Murray,

"...a polished ensemble of actors..." (Josh Sherman,
